Van Buren County is located in southwest Michigan. This area was originally
inhabited by Potawatomi Indians, who traded with early European explorers.
Van Buren county was established in 1837 and formed in 1840 from Warren and
White counties. This county was named after Martin Van Buren the then Secretary
of State and the latter President of the United States. The county seat is Spencer.
