Michigan Counties - Shiawassee County

Archaeological findings shows evidence that man lived in the Shiawassee area over
2,000 years ago. In 1947 a farmer found 3 huge teeth that was identified as
Mastadon teeth. The first Indians that settled here were the Chippewa's.
The Shiawassee river was used to head north to the Saginaw River to hunt and trap.
In 1816 Henry Bolieu set up a trading post on the Shiawassee River. In 1836
immigrants came and settled on the Shiawassee River and then spreading throughout
the county. Many of these settlers were farmers that grew wheat and potatoes and
raised cattle and sheep.

Shiawassee County is named for its principal river the Shiawassee River. Shiawassee
is thought to be an Indian word meaning river that twists about.

Today Shiawassee County is a prominent agricultural county with over 2,000 farms
producing soybeans, beans, oats, winter wheat, corn, hay, peppermint, dairy
herds, and poultry. Manufacturing concerns are diversified, including a
vitrified tile plant at Corunna, one of a few in the state.
