Michigan Counties - Schoolcraft County

Schoolcraft County was created on March 9, 1843, from Chippewa and
Mackinac counties, and organized on March 23, 1871, with the seat
established at Onota. By 1882 this was changed to Manistique. It's
present limits were defined in 1885. It is named for Henry R. Schoolcraft,
the noted authority on Indian matters, who formulated and originated
the names of many of the counties in the State. The county seat is now
at Manistique (zip 49854).

Manistique, located at the mouth of the Manistique River, was home to the
Chicago Lumber Company. Seney became known as the "Sin City of the
North" because of its many saloons and brothels. Today Schoolcraft
County industries are stone quarrying and paper production. Rentalism has also
added to the economy. There are streams and rivers for canoeists and fishermen.
Kitch-iti-Kipi is Michigan's largest spring.
