Advertise On All About Michigan

The county was named after President James Monroe who traveled
to Michigan in 1817. 13,000 years ago this farmland was at the
bottom of an inland lake which was formed when the glacial ice
melted.

The region was first occupied by Effi-er-ro-nous Indians. Lake Erie
was derived from this name. Later on Ottawa and Pottawatomie Indians
settle here. French-Canadians were the first white settlers in the
Monroe area in the 1780's along the River Raisin. This river got its
name from "River aux Raisin", because the banks of the river were
covered with grapes vines. The war of 1812 was hard on this county
with the Battle of the River Raisin. Monroe county remained an importance
because of its location on Lake Erie. Toledo was a part of the county
until 1835. The city of Monroe is the state's only port on Lake Erie.

Monroe County is governed by a nine-person, district-elected Board of
Commissioners and has a county administrator.
