The name Kalamazoo comes from the Indian word "Kikalamazoo" which means
the mirage of reflecting river. Agricultural attracted people to the county.
One of the early settlers was Bazel Harrison, who was the nephew of Benjamin
Harrison (signer of the Declaration of Independence) and the cousin of president
William Harrison. The paper industry flourished. Kalamazoo county is the home
of the Gibson Mandolin-Guitar Manufacturing Company and the world's largest corset
manufacturer, Kalamazoo Corset Company. Today UpJohn is the major employer of the
county. Colleges include; Kalamazoo College, Western Michigan University and
Nazareth College. The county has many lakes and streams.

Kalamazoo is an ideal destination offering attractions, lodging, recreation,
dining, and shopping for every preference and budget.

Kalamazoo County is located in the heart of the Great Lakes region, midway
between Chicago and Detroit at the intersection of I-94 and US131.
