The county was named after John C Calhoun who was Vice President of United
States. In 1830 the first white settler was Sidney Ketchem who bought land
along the Kalamazoo River. Many settlers came from New England. 1832 brought a
cholera epidemic in Marshall that caused many people to leave the area. Albion
College was founded in 1835 in the city of Albion. The Seventh-Day Adventists
moved their world headquarters to Battle Creek. Battle Creek is also home to
Kellogg Cereal Plants.

Calhoun County is both rich in history and on the cutting edge of
tomorrow's technology and development. Calhoun County offers the
serenity of country living and the cultural and recreational
amenities offered in urban settings.

Numerous parks are connected to the Battle Creek and Kalamazoo rivers
and provide opportunities for hiking, fishing, canoeing, picnicking and
other recreation. Community sporting, cultural, ethnic, historical and
holiday festivals provide plenty for residents and visitors to see and do.
