Advertise On All About Michigan

Baraga County was named after Father Frederic Baraga. He was
the Bishop of northern Michigan in 1853, with his headquarters
in Sault Saint Marie. Father Baraga built a Roman Catholic Mission
at Assinins where he spent 10 years educating Indians in their
native tongue.

Lumbering and lumber products provide most of today's income for
Baraga's residents. Michigan Tech's modern Alberta Saw Mill is
located near L'Anse.

Baraga County is a recreational county with its rugged coastlines,
virgin hardwoods, old mines, and numerous historical locations.
Rentalist and sportsmen accommodations cater to visitors in all seasons.
