ALCONA COUNTY

Alcona

Advertise On All About Michigan

This county was named after an Indian work meaning "the beautiful plains"
by historian Henry R Schoolcraft. Early artifacts found here are stone lance heads,
similar to those used by the ancestor's of today's Native Amerians from approximately
9000 BC. Native Americans while traveling to trading posts would stop to camp on Lake
Huron's shoreline near "The Great Black Rock", which is north of Greenbush. Out in the
lake offerings were placed in the rock's hollowed out surface to ensure safe journeys.
The White man began to settle in Alcona in 1845 where they fished and lumbered. Today
both lumbering and farming are still an important part of Alcona, as well as cattle,
dairying, berries and alfalfa seed. With its 30 miles of Lake Huron shoreline this area
is a popular resort area. Within this area is one of Michigan's largest lakes, Hubbard
Lake, for boating fishing and swimming. The AuSable River allows for miles of trout streams.
